A note from Joao

If you teach young children, you know how quickly a class can change.

One child is ready to try everything. Another wants to watch. Someone wanders away just as you begin explaining the game.

These are familiar moments when teaching this age group. A thoughtful lesson plan helps you respond with patience and keep the class moving.

I’m creating Kids BJJ for Toddlers to give instructors a practical resource they can turn to before stepping onto the mat.

My hope is that this gives you more time to pay attention to the children and less time wondering what to teach next.

Inside the program

A clear plan, with room to be yourself.

You’ll know what you’re working toward, how to introduce the activity, and what to notice as children practice. Every lesson includes these five teaching tools.

01

A goal

Give the class a clear purpose and know what you want children to practice.

02

A teaching sequence

Follow a plan that helps you introduce the lesson and move from one activity to the next.

03

Game rules

Explain the activity simply so children can spend more time moving and practicing.

04

An observation point

Notice small steps forward and recognize when a child needs more support.

05

A parent message

Help families understand what their child is learning and the purpose behind the play.

The way we teach matters

Connection comes first.

Before asking a young child to follow instructions or practice with a partner, we need to help them feel comfortable with us.

That means welcoming the child who needs a little more time, noticing small efforts, and making room to try again.

Relational First,
Physical Second.

This program brings that approach into a clear lesson structure you can use in your own classes.

One lesson each week. Time to learn.

Toddlers need repetition to learn. This program gives you 24 lessons for 24 weeks of classes, with one lesson to focus on each week.

Teach that week’s lesson two or three times. Familiar movements and games give children another chance to join in, understand the activity, and feel proud of what they can do.

You don’t need a new lesson every time children step onto the mat. Revisit the same goal, offer small adjustments, and give each child time to practice before moving on.

A few things you may be wondering

Your questions, answered.

Who is this program for?

It is a teaching resource for BJJ instructors and academy owners working with children ages 3 to 5.

What does each lesson include?

A goal, teaching sequence, game rules, observation point, and parent message. The 24 video lessons are organized into 24 weeks of classes.

When will the videos be available?

The completed video program will be available in January 2027. Your preorder is paid now and reserves your copy for that release.

How do I use one lesson across a week?

Focus on one lesson each week and revisit it two or three times. Toddlers need repetition, so the same goal and familiar activities can guide each class that week. Adapt the pace and support to your group.

Is this the same as the written toddler curriculum?

This page is for the new video program coming in January 2027. You can explore the existing written curriculum on our toddler curriculum page.
